...allein zuhause

Für zwei Wochen werde ich allein an Bord bleiben, bevor Hanna Mitte Mai nach Lelystad kommt. Das ist die längste Zeit, nachdem ich im August 2020 schon ein paar Tage allein war. Das Arbeitstempo wird sicher sinken in dieser Zeit, aber ein paar „Kleinigkeiten“ hoffe ich doch, erledigen zu können.

I’ll be staying on board alone for a fortnight before Hanna comes to Lelystad in mid-May. That’s the longest I’ve been alone after a few days in August 2020. The pace of work will certainly slow down during this time, but I hope to get a few „minor things“ done.

Eine der ersten Arbeiten, die ich angehe, ist die Reinigung des Decks und des Cockpits. Am Land-Standplatz gibt es keinen Wasseranschluss, daher mussten wir wohl oder übel alle Spinnweben, jeden Moosbewuchs und andere Verunreinigungen in Kauf nehmen. Aber jetzt, wo die pepperbird nur 20 m vom Wasserschlauch entfernt liegt, kann ich endlich alles saubermachen.

Als Erstes putze ich das Vordeck, bis ich beim Mastfuß ankomme, bei dem sich über die Jahre richtige Erde angesammelt hat. Es ist nicht wenig Arbeit, aber es lohnt sich. Nach insgesamt drei Tagen sieht man wieder das Teak unter dem Moos, das Deck erstrahlt wieder im edlen Blaugrau und alle braunen und grünen Flecken sind entfernt. Alle Steinchen und der Sand sind aus dem Cockpit entfernt und sogar die abmontierten Salinge sind vom grün-braunen Belag befreit.

Ich bin aber nicht nur am Putzen, ich lerne auch unseren Steg-Nachbarn, Henk, ein wenig kennen, der sich und seine stählerne Aurora für einen Trip nach Dänemark vorbereitet. Er scheint ein netter Kerl zu sein und sein Boot ist eine Schönheit!

One of the first jobs I tackle is cleaning the deck and cockpit. There’s no water supply at the standing ground, so we had to put up with all the cobwebs, moss and other dirt for better or worse. But now that the pepperbird is only 20 metres away from the water hose, I can finally clean everything.

The first thing I do is clean the foredeck until I reach the base of the mast, which has accumulated some real soil over the years. It’s a lot of work, but it’s worth it. After a total of three days, you can see the teak under the moss again, the deck shines again in a noble blue-grey and all brown and green stains have been removed. All the gravel and sand have been removed from the cockpit, and even the dismantled spreaders have been freed from their green-brown coating.

But I’m not just cleaning, I’m also getting to know our jetty neighbour, Henk, who is preparing himself and his steel Aurora for a trip to Denmark. He seems to be a nice guy, and his boat is just a beauty.

Aber nicht nur mit Henk komme ich zum Plaudern, sondern ich treffe auch Peter aus Arnhem in Utrecht. Wir verbringen einen ganzen Nachmittag in der malerischen alten Stadt und kommen endlich wieder einmal dazu, uns ausführlich zu unterhalten. Zweimal schauen wir beim Café Cafca vorbei, einem kuriosen Lokal, das sowohl Kaffeehaus als auch Trödelladen ist. Der Wirt ist so originell wie sein Geschäft und wir fühlen uns wohl, auch wenn es wegen des ganzen Krams kaum Platz zum Sitzen gibt. Am Abend gehen wir noch asiatisch essen, bevor jeder von uns wieder nach Hause fährt.

Während der nächsten Tage mache ich zuerst ein wenig Ordnung am Boot, sortiere das Werkzeug so, dass man wieder das findet, was man braucht. Jeden zweiten Tag fahre ich mit Rad zum Albert Heijn, dem nächstgelegenen Supermarkt, um mich mit dem nötigsten zu versorgen. Das nimmt etwa eine Stunde am Vormittag in Anspruch.

Zu den Dingen, die ich allein erledigen kann, gehört auch das Ölen der neuen Deckel für die Staufächer an der Backbord-Seite. Mit Matthias habe ich die Klapp-Konstruktion für das Doppelbett demontiert, eine der Randleisten fix am Rahmen befestigt und drei neue Deckel aus Sperrholz gemacht. Schön geschliffen und fertig geölt, schaut das ganz gut aus. Wir haben in vier Jahren dieses Doppelbett nie verwendet und auch wenn die pepperbird offiziell für 6 Personen zugelassen ist, werden wir nicht mehr als vier Erwachsene an Bord nehmen. Sie ist ja doch ein kleines Boot.

But I don’t just get to chat to Henk, I also meet Peter from Arnhem in Utrecht. We spend a whole afternoon in the picturesque old town and finally get to chat at length again. We stop twice at Café Cafca, a quirky place that is both a coffee house and a junk shop. The landlord is as original as his shop, and we feel at home, even though there is hardly any room to sit down because of all the junk. In the evening, we go out for an Asian meal before we all head home again.

Over the next few days, I start by tidying up the boat and sorting the tools so that we can find what we need. About every other day I cycle to Albert Heijn, the nearest supermarket, to stock up on the essentials. That takes about an hour in the morning and serves well as an exercise.

One of the things I can do on my own is oil the new lids for the storage compartments on the port side. Together with Matthias, I dismantled the folding construction for the double bed, fixed one of the edge mouldings to the frame and made three new lids from plywood. Nicely sanded and oiled, they look excellent. We’ve never used this double bed in four years and even though the pepperbird is officially approved for 6 people, we won’t take more than four adults on board. She is a small boat, after all.

Ein paar Tage, bevor Hanna kommt, bricht Henk zu seiner Reise in den Norden auf. Leider hat keiner von uns daran gedacht, dass wir Telefonnummern austauschen könnten, aber ich denke, wir werden uns am Steg 6B demnächst wieder treffen.
Ich widme mich dann einer eher unangenehmen Arbeit. Die alten durchhängenden Vinyl-Bespannungen müssen entfernt werden, das ist eine langwierige und schmutzige Angelegenheit, weil sich der Schaum auf der Rückseite schon weitgehend aufgelöst hat. Sobald man ihn angreift, verwandelt er sich in eine Kaugummi-artige Masse. Mit einem Schaber, einer rotierenden Drahtbürste in der Bohrmaschine und mit einem Exzenter-Schleifer rücke ich dem Zeug zu Leibe.
Damit Kork oder Filz an den Rumpf geklebt werden kann, muss der Untergrund gut gesäubert werden.

A few days before Hanna arrives, Henk sets off on his journey north. Unfortunately, neither of us thought to exchange phone numbers, but I think we’ll meet again one day soon at jetty 6B.

I then devote myself to a rather unpleasant task. The old sadly sagging vinyl coverings have to be removed, which is a tedious and dirty job because the foam on the back has already largely dissolved. As soon as you touch it, it turns into a chewing gum-like sticky mass. I use a scraper, a rotating wire brush in the drill and an eccentric sander to get to grips with the stuff.
The surface has to be cleaned thoroughly before cork or felt can be glued to the hull.
